NEWS AT LHR
**** 23,186 hens re-homed to this date****
If you would like to make a donation to help us, please click on the link below. Thank you

Sad news for Little Hen Rescue. On Saturday 22nd May 2010, when returning from a farm, one of our trailers turned over on the A14.
This has been an incredibly sad and stressful time for us. Tragically we lost around 100 hens but have the other 700 happily recouping at LHR.
Lets all pray for their little souls, and try to focus on the girls we have saved.
It's been a frightening time, and our worst nightmare. To add to the upset of losing some of our girls, we also had the 18 ft trailer destroyed and a 4 x 4 written off.
At this current time we are looking at buying a flat bed truck or a 3 axle trailer. This will bring more security when travelling with the hens. We are going to try to raise the funds because a truck or trailer will be expensive and trucks have high running costs. We hope we can manage it.
If you can help us raise money for the new trailer or truck, even donating a pound, please use our Google checkout or send a cheque to us written out to Little Hen Rescue. Thank you.
Thank you to all our volunteers that have worked hard this weekend.
George
George our new turkey has arrived from another rescue centre to be a husband for our small turkey ladies..

Boy haven't you grown!

Believe us or not below is the photos of our 2 male sponsor turkeys!! They are currently annoyed at their limited food supply, they are simply growing to heavy to fast!

Our 2 female turkeys are also doing very very well.. Daphne sadly had to be separated from the others when she grew to heavy and the larger hen bird started to pick at her. She is now settled in with our recent residents 4 small Norfolk black turkeys and again on a serious diet.

The sad case of 'meat' birds, they put weight on just thinking about food, white turkeys aren't usually allowed to live over 22 weeks. At this age they are extremely large. Our babies were born beginning of July.

Our new babies..

Our newbies were rescued from a farm and were due to be destroyed when they weren't making the weight they should have been for there age. They now belong to LHR, and so will any of their brothers or sisters with the same fate.

These babies will soon be up for sponsorship! So keep an eye on our sponsorship page!

A huge Thank you to Brackencraft for making ORANGE, LEMONGRASS & CINNAMON soap to help raise money for Little Hen Rescue.

Sadly our best boy Buster died of a heart attack. Buster was our ex meat (broiler) chicken, originally destined for the supermarket. He came to us and
enjoyed his last days in our fields.
RIP Buster.

Sadly, we have no longer our Lincolnshire collection point. We will occasionally have a Peterborough/Cambs drop off point, if you are interested in collecting from there please state this when contacting us through our >> Contact us << page or contact Mel direct on cambslhr@googlemail.com
Welcome our new sponsor cockerel

Buster
Buster has been with LHR for around 2 months, came to us from a family that could no longer have him and were very sad to see him go.
Buster is a broiler chicken, bred and built as a table bird, a breed that is used in nearly all farms that supply the bigger meat chickens destined for the supermarkets. Buster would have been given around 15 weeks of life before his slaughter date. A fast growing chicken that isn't actually meant to live over that age.
Buster's original owners rescued him from a intensive farm and hoped to keep him, but found due to his enormous size he was unsafe to keep with their pet hens. Buster is now a permanent resident at LHR, he will need his weight monitored and he is to heavy to go in with hens. He has his own area surrounded by other chickens that chat to him through his fence. Buster is a content, friendly and happy boy
If you feel you could sponsor Buster for £15 a year to help us support him for the rest of his natural life then please visit our >>Sponsor a chicken << page.
Much to our disappointment we currently unable to take in any cockerels for the time being.

We have a high amount of youngsters which are still to vulnerable to be re-homed with our large feisty girls, so we are lacking in space. Our turn over for re-homing our boys is usually quite high, but recently we have had to turn people away who wanted them as they are to young. We are able to advertise your boys on our adopt a bird page and will also be able to take adult cock birds close to 10th October rescue as we have a large re-homing weekend and they can go almost immediately. Please check your boys for lice and treat if needed, as will not be re-home them with our hens until they are clear. Battles louse powder dusted onto their bodies seems to have the best result.
The high number of boys is due to people hatching eggs with no realisation to the high ratio of male to female. Please if you are considering hatching eggs, then please think about what you are going to do with a high number of male chicks before you do it.
Welcome our new residents

Bernard Matthews turkeys born on 1st July, they were taken off site and are not allowed to be returned due to bio-security.

These little guys will now be our lovely resident turkeys, hopefully joining us for shows, and educational visits.

Soon our little bernards will be up for sponsorship, so keep an eye on our slightly different gift!

February's rescue!
Thank you to all the re-homers that came to collect their hens on the 7th/8th of February, some at very short notice. I hope all your hens have settled well. Should you have any worries or problems please contact me (07717757596).

Thank you to all our volunteers that came and worked really hard at the farm and at LHR. It is incredibly hard going, and I can imagine you were in need of a bath and an early night after that!

Thank you to Adele at Animals at home Kings Lynn, who not only helped at the farm catching and crating the hens but transported as many hens as she could in the back of her car for people at Kings Lynn!

Thank you to Lyn and Mark at ROSAH who helped at the yard all day and also transported lots of girls back to people near Sutton Bridge!!
Thanks to our knitters!!

Thank you to all the knitters that have been clicking away getting our girls jumpers ready for their release! We received over 1500 jumpers.
Well done!
Your recent donations and donations for re-homed hens...
We have raised enough money for a 112 metre enclosure for our girls. Thank you to everyone that donated to help us and those who re-homed our last lot of hens in December, the donations you gave us for the hens has given us a safe place for another 500 needy girls!! We decided to get the 6ft chain link fencing as it is more permanent and will soon be adding electric wire around the bottom and top of enclosure to stop anything climbing over or digging under.

We will continue to build more as we re-home more hens.
All donations will be put towards our fencing fund!!
WE ARE ON FACEBOOK. PLEASE CLICK BELOW LINK TO BE TAKEN TO OUR GROUP, PLEASE JOIN AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO DO SO TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR 'LHR'. THANK YOU.

Cambridge University's XL shed!

Thank you to Cambridge University who allowed us to collect a very large shed that they no longer had use for.
It was a job getting it into smaller parts, in order to get it on our trailer, but with help from 2 strong men who sawed it into smaller sections, we managed it in the end!!
October and November Rescue Donations
Thank you to everyone that re-homed hens throughout October and November. Your donations paid off the outstanding money on our trailer and now we owe nothing!
It also paid our electric and water bill at LHR for the last 3 months.
We are continuing to improve the LHR yard. We aim to make it more fox/dog proof for our hens, and we hope to expand, to enable us to rescue more hens. We have managed to empty 2 farm sheds recently, which is a great achievement and we are aiming to do it all again in January's rescue.
Nothing we hate more than leaving hens behind, but with your continual support we won't have to do it anymore.
Sponsorships and Online Donations
Thank you to everyone for supporting our resident hens. With your sponsorship we have paid for medication, 2 large round bales of straw and 2 large orders of food.
All the resident girls are doing well and we have some new white hens to add to the flock. 3 who had prolapses (will need monitoring and corn diet), 1 with bad wound to back, and 2 that have been returned due to their extremely nervous nature. They are all now happily grazing the fields with some new boyfriends!!
Foster homes needed for 3 of these girls, if anyone can help us out please visit our 'Foster a hen' page
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support which is enabling us to educate people about commercial hens, re-home them and save from them from the abattoir
