Occasionally we rescue hens that aren't able to adapt to their new world as quickly as the others, these numbers are low, but it happens. This may be due to the stress incurred during their life in the battery farm.  Others have injuries such as sprained legs or wings.   Some need a little physiotherapy on their legs to teach them to walk and use their muscles again.  We keep these hens until fully recovered, we get them the treatment they need, we feed, care and house them until they are strong enough to be re-homed.

Would you like to sponsor a hen, cockerel or turkey?   It would make a great present for a child's birthday or a Little Hen Rescue fan.

For £15 a hen a year or £20 for a different resident the lucky sponsor would receive;

  • A Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Their rescue story with their photos

  • Little Hen Rescue charm

What your sponsor money will help to buy them...

Rupert

Sponsor LHR's lawnmower!  Although he is very good at eating the grass down for us, we need supplement food and to keep him healthy with worming and fly treatment.  Rupert is a rescued hand reared lamb, and like all castrated ram lambs he would have been destined for the meat market.  Likely for him, he has a place at LHR for life along with his brother Yogi.

Please help us support this gentle and harmless creature.

Scrags

Scrags is another hen who was pulled from the battery cages and she originally looked ok.  We later discovered her laying on the floor of chicken hut, thin and to weak to stand.

Scrags was unable to figure out how to drink from a normal bowl, she had been used to a different form of drinker and had become to stuck in her ways.  She would have rather dehydrate than be brave enough to try it.

After isolation, regular dipping her beak into water and feeding strength building food, she stood and walked.  She suffered with an arthritic right leg, and walked with a limp.  She has happily found herself a little hutch that she calls her own.

She now happily roams with the others...

George and his wives

George originally came from another rescue that had to many stags, we needed a nice gentleman for our rescued hen turkeys.

Our hen turkeys were rescued from a farm where they didn't make the size, this means that they were the smaller turkeys of the flock and when weighed they were under the expected weight margin.

Usually when this happens they are distroyed to save wasting food on turkeys that aren't going to make the end weight.  Instead we take them.

Lily

This is Lily, again a rescued battery hen that was extremely nervous.   As you can see she is almost completely bald and very thin.  Lily's treatment was a gentle introduction to the world, fat building food, and a very warm shed to keep her little body warm at night.

We hope that gradually Lily will learn to trust us and the new safe world around her.

Ronnie and Reggie

These two boys are ex bernard matthews turkeys that were taken off site as day olds and unable to return due to biosecurity.  They have been with us 1 day old born beginning of July 2009.

These big boys were destined for meat, but now live securely at Little Hen's.  They will not be rehomed due to their vulnerability.  Our boys are kept on a strict healthy diet, because similar to the broiler chickens their weight gain is incredible.  These brothers turned into giants within a few months.

Ronnie is slightly smaller with brown eyes weighing in a 30 kgs!

Reggie is the largest with blue eyes weighing in at 40 kgs!
